Award Winning Farm
Singing Frogs Farm is the recipient of the North American 2010 Farmer-Rancher Award for Pollinator Conservation and Awareness Education due to our dedication to a biodiverse landscape rich with native wildlife and pollinators. We have established almost 2,000 Sonoma County native pollinator-friendly perennial plants on our farm which provide high quality pollen and nectar for bees and other beneficial pollinators sequentially for all twelve months of the year! This award was given to us by the North American Pollinator protection Campaign www.NAPPC.org in conjunction with Pollinator Partnership www.pollinator.org. These are excellent resources for pollinator action and information. Plus, we’ll be partnering with them to bring great Bee Biology Talks to Singing Frogs Farm - so stay tuned to our Farm Events Calendar!
The Farm Dog
Our ever exuberant and very friendly farm dog, Wenge, will greet you upon your arrival with the characteristic Australian Shepherd BARK, BARK!! But once you’re on the farm, don’t be surprised if he brings you a ball to throw for him... repeatedly! You’ll be his new best friend.
The Barnyard
Besides our roughly 250 Girlie Girls (our laying hens), our farm is home to Lin Lin (a Jacob’s ewe), Mehammedeh (a rare Soay ram), his mate Leucaena (a Soay ewe) and Lily (their Soay baby girl), Max (our very old Angora Goat), and Mocha-lee (our milking goat). Our animals are an important part of our food production, helping to maintain a sustainable, healthy and rich balance of nutrients on our property and in our soil. After all, Mother Nature doesn’t segregate her plants from her animals. Why should we?
Strawberries
Our cool valley bottom is ideal for growing yummy strawberries from early May until the rains and hard frosts of October.
Our Greenhouse
Designed and built by Farmer Paul, our 1,150 square foot greenhouse is a remarkable example of energy efficiency. While greenhouse building companies told us that it should cost $400 to $800 per month to heat, cool and ventilate this size greenhouse, and we know of other comparable local greenhouses that cost upwards of $1,200 per month to operate, the greenhouse at Singing Frogs Farm costs a maximum of $35 a month in energy to heat, cool and ventilate - all while maintaining a balmy 45 to 95 degree range in temps - regardless of the outside temperature!
Water Is Life
Of 139 ongoing armed conflicts in the world roughly 60 are being fought primarily over water rights. We must respect our communal water resources and people’s access to them. Singing Frogs Farm only uses surface run-off from seasonal and year-round springs to irrigate our fields. This means that the natural flow of water on our land in unchanged and undiminished. We have inherited and created six permanent and seasonal ponds at Singing Frogs Farm. These ponds are full of wildlife from crawdads to turtles, river otter, flotillas of pelicans, geese, ducks, great blue herons, night herons, egrets, green herons, songbirds, insects, snakes, fish and the occasional swan!
Hedgerows!
We’ve established almost 3,000 Sonoma County native perennial plants which provide habitat, shelter, and food for pollinators, insects, birds and all wildlife.
Certified Bee Friendly Farm
The Partnership For Sustainable Pollination (PFSP) certified Singing Frogs Farm one of the first Bee Friendly Farms in the United States. Being bee friendly does not mean just being organic. In fact, organic pesticides and other organic sprays kill or weaken the immune systems of honey bees and other insect pollinators and contribute to the Colony Collapse Disorder just like conventional sprays and chemicals do. Being Bee Friendly is about being Beyond Organic! Check out PFSP’s website www.pfspbees.org for more information on polinators and the Bee Friendly Farming certification program. Join one of our Farm Tours (see the Farm Events webpage) to find out more about our bee friendly farming techniques.
Free Range Chickens (and Eggs)!
Enjoy an Egg Share with your CSA membership - free range eggs have been shown to be far more nutrient dense and healthy than eggs from caged or warehoused chickens with little to no access to soil and grass.
Love Your Mother
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is about nurturing and strengthening Mother Earth’s natural systems. The more life that thrives at Singing Frogs Farm, the more resilient our ecological niche is, the fewer problems with pests we have. Pests are a population explosion of an unwanted specie which can only happen in the absence of natural controls. On our farm, we are creating a healthy, vibrant, resilient, and biodiverse ecosystem - that also happens to produce food for us Humans!
Year Round Food Production
Singing Frogs Farm is a year round CSA farm. We grow dozens of root crops, brassicas, and leafy greens to keep you healthy and happy throughout the dead of winter.
